more fog closer to the ocean with upper 30s in oakland. it's 38 half moon bay. by noontime we will be sunny. it will be haziest in the south by with mid-50s there. by the afternoon. we are a few degrees warmer. once again, a chilly night tonight. it looks like the trend is going for warmer conditions and not wetter. i'll explain coming up. katie. >> lisa, thank you. >> five people, including a child are being treated for injuries after a high-speed chase in pittsburgh. a car was speeding through a construction zone and rear ended another car. the impact shoved that second car into two other vehicles. four people were taken to the hospital by ambulance and the two-year-old was airlifted to the hospital. no word at this hour on any arrests. we know know what killed the woman who was found dead in a locked stairwell at san francisco general hospital. this morning the autopsy report is not sitting well with friends of the woman.

abc7 news anchor homo dates has the latest. >> this is the autopsy report for a woman who was found dead in the san francisco general hospital in a stairwell. report said she died of probable electric light embillions with delirium clinical accept it is in stairwell due to comply takingings of chronic ethanollism, clinical history. ethanol refers to alcoholism, which has an attorney very upset. >> now they added this as a sec dear cause of death, acute alcoholism by history, that's absolutely gratuitous and not necessary. that's not why this lady >> he also said the family was supposed to see the medical

examiner's report before the media, which he said went the case. >> i certainly will pursue through various avenues that there be some investigation into the way this particular case has been handled, whether it's through a regulatory agency or whether it's through your grand jury. >> some of spalding's friends said they are angry because they feel the report blames the victim, who they said would still be alive had the hospital not lost her. they still don't really know how she died. we had the report explained. >> the electrolight imbalances with a liver whose inability to compensate for them resulted in a collapse of her heart or her brain resulting in death. >> ama daetz, abc7 news. >> developing news. authorities have identified an 18-year-old as a student who opened fire with a shotgun at a colorado high school. it happened yesterday, just a day before the one-year anniversary of the sandy hook elementary school shooting in connecticut.

he authorities say yesterday carl pearson entered into the high school and shot a student before killing himself. we have details about the gunman. >> terror on the campus of colorado's arapaho high school, where 18-year-old carl pearson, a senior at the school, armed with two molotov cocktails and a shotgun opened fire inside the school. >> he shot her and she came screaming down the stairs help me, help me. >> running kind of military style and i looked, and i double looked, it it was a shotgun. the gunman called out the name of a teacher seen in this facebook photo, tracy murphy. >> he knew he was the target and he left that school in an effort to try to encourage the shooter to also leave the school. >> a 15-year-old student who suffered a significant gunshot wound is currently listed in critical condition. >> armed deputies rushed into the school. >> from the time that the deputy

called out the incident until the time that he discovered the shooter's body, was within five minutes. >> hundreds of students were evacuated from campus with their hands held high above their head. a similar scene that reminded many here of the columbine killings where 14 years ago and eight miles away 13 people were gunned down. >> you guys are not that far from columbine. it had to be in everybody's mind. >> it was so surreal because in colorado unfortunately we've had so many these instances. >> colorado is one of the states enacting tougher gun laws, including banning high capacity round magazines. this incident involved a shotgun, though. abc news, los angeles. >> in just about 20 minutes, president obama and michelle obama will observe a moment of silence and light candles in memory of those killed at sandy hook school.

officials say it's time to stop hiding behind the constitution and create stronger gun laws. >> in the name of second amendment we cannot use that to kill more children and kill more babies. >> several events are being held around the bay area throughout the day. we have information on our website. abc7news.com under "see it on tv." happening today there will be several gun buyback events around the bay area. our media partner, "the mercury news" reports san jose will handing out gift cards for working guns, rifle, and other weapons. it will be held at 9:00 at our lead of guadalupe church. and there will be a buy back event in youth uprising on

mcarthur blvd in oakland . one hundred dollars and $200 cash will be given there. and also tennessee street at 9:00 a.m. a man suspected in a series of bank robberies may be connected to a failed bank heist and kidnapping 35 years ago. christopher wooten was shot after an attempted bank robbery in novato and the chase. they believe he's the cotten ball bandit who robbed 10 other banks since september. court records shows he has a criminal past. in 1978 he and another man abducted a woman during a botched oil painting robbery and was released from prison if 1990 >> we have more details of a high school band in san jose who was robbed of its fundraising money. this is the oak grove band in concert last night. an armed guard will now be at every wednesday night bingo fundraiser. that, after a man with a gun took up to $5,000 from the weekly game earlier this week. surveillance cameras will also be added. full water service has been

this morning the african national congress held a farewell service for antiaparti leader nelson mandela. the military handed over mandela's flag-draped coffin this morning. later today he will be flown to the eastern cape in preparation for his funeral tomorrow. the late president died last week at age 95. his body lay in state for three days this week, drawing huge crowds of south africans. and there will be a gathering today at u.c. berkeley to pay tribute to nelson mandela. it will include a candle light vigil, as well as music from the choir. it will take place from three to five this afternoon at u.c. berkeley's main campus. passengers on an alegient air flight are okay after an emergency landing. >> it collided with a bird.

they were forced to make an emergency landing. >> you heard the landing gear come up, and then we heard a thump and you kind of felt it, and then the plane smarted -- started smelling like burnt feathers and burnt flesh of some sort. >> i was like what is that smell, what is going on? i said please just make it there alive. >> scary. >> they said there's no guarantee that birds won't get close to engines. >> a single engine cessna went down lift night near lake immediate. authorities say the plane clipped a fence at a nearby rock yard as it tried to land and skid today a stop. it was on its which to north las vegas fromas. investigators are looking into what led to the emergency landing. new details this morning. the two bart workers who were killed on the tracks in october were facing in the opposite direction of the train that hit them. that's according to autopsy reports released last night.

the two men, mr. sheppard and mr. daniels, were inspecting the tracks during the bart strike. the investigation shows neither person was acting as a lookout. the autopsy was released as bart and its unions try to resolve a last minute dispute over a costly family leave clause mistakenly left in the new contract. talks resume next week. >> a man is dead after being shot and killed by los angeles police after a high-speed chase in a corvette. he rolled through the streets for about an hour before slamming into another consider about 10:30 last night. he tried to one. -- he tried to run. one officer pulled the trigger, killing him. police officers tried to pull the man over for reckless driving. new details this morning about the health effects of e-cigarettes. a study in the "john natural of nicotine and toe back coresearch" show e-cigarettes

hours. concord at 31 and livermore at 34. so it is going to be a frosty start for most out there. and temperatures coming up just a few degrees today. our south beach camera right now. and still it is really cold over in the east bay, as well. a spare the air again today. it's the seventh one of the winter season. so illegal to burn. milder pattern beginning tomorrow, taking us through monday. then a bit of a cooling trend throughout the middle of the week. so from our sutro camera, looks pretty good now but when the sun comes up, it will be a little bit hazier. medium air quality around the bay except in the santa clara valley where you will notice more of the haze closer to the surface as the pollutants gather there. unfortunately the stagnate air pattern continues as double barrel high pressure location us in this pattern. the jet stream well to the north, as well as the storm track. with higher pressure we have sinking air and a lid on the atmosphere. the winds usually light, but we will get an offshore wind today.

and that will help to allow for more sunshine at the coast. we do have some fog there now. temperatures will be slowly making their way into the 60s. pretty much average for this time of year. but let's take a look at san jose for the next several days. and while it will be average tomorrow in the low 60s, look at that. 70 degrees on monday. yep. that's too warm for december. upper 60s by tuesday. here comes the cold front. it's going to drop our temperatures wednesday, into thursday, bring some extra clouds. maybe a sprinkle along the north coast, but overall we are just going to city dry for everyone around the by. wall nut creek half-marathon, it will be nip by out there. 32 within the next hour with low 50s by noontime. and looking across the bay, 61 in oakland with 60 in livermore. look for 62 after that morning frost in santa rosa. the accuweather seven-day forecast, spare the air today, milder tomorrow. rising temperatures on monday.

over the weekend. that will warm us up from day-to-day. boy, this morning it is cold with 26 in napa, 29 in santa rosa, only 33 in the san ramon valley. so the colder air draining into the valleys. 31 concord, 34 in san francisco with 13 degrees cooler this morning half moon bay at 37. pacifica and daly city at 45 right now. this afternoon upper 50s to lower 60s with sunshine throughout the bay. we will be seasonal with numbers near 60 degrees closer to the water. and that fog should burn off at the coastline. we will talk about the high waves, the spare the air and when we will see some rain coming up. katie. >> lisa, thank you. we just showed you live president obama and first lady michelle obama at the white house lighting canned he else in memory of the newtown shooting. a bay area school has led the way in online discussions on gun violence and what students can do to stop it. education reporter leeann melendez tells us more. >> i hope that people with mental health issues will be

given professional help instead of guns. >> i hope they will do better background checks for new gun owners. >> reporter: their thoughts are words and words turn into action. these eighth graders at the middle school created hand cut-outs and wrote messages starting with "i hope." when done they uploaded the picture of their message on to a website called uclass.org. that's where teachers can access any kind of less son. one of the featured online lessons is called hands of hope. >> they really wanted to figure out a way to help teachers teach about sandy hook. events like this are very difficult to teach about. that when tragedies happen, when -- burglar things that you have done in response to that? >> jessica, a teacher, co-wrote the lesson with a former u.s. congresswoman gabby giffords, herself a victim of gun violence. and with the parent of a child who was killed at sandy hook.

other teachers around the nation who log on to the website follow her lead. hannah phelps, a student, says it's raising awareness. >> people are aware of what's happening and people can reach out to each other and help each other in times like this when people aren't really sure what's happening. >> i hope people of all races, sexual orientations and ages will choose to come together instead of bullying each other. i think most people know about it, but they just don't know what to do about it. >> they hope it is a starting point about more discussion about what it means to be safe in schools today, how do we make sure we are safe and how do we integrate those conversations into school. >> all fourth and eighth graders at this school have already completed the hands of hope lesson. in los altos, leeann melendez, abc7 news. happening today, volunteers will lay wreaths on headstone at san francisco's presidio national cemetery to honor veterans.

it's part of a nationwide ceremony. it's part of wreaths across america held every year on the second saturday of december. organizers anticipate more than 400,000 wreaths will be placed nationwide by more than 150,000 volunteers. for more than 40 years san francisco's exploratorium has been known mostly for hands on science and art. now they are expanding with exhibits that focus more on how people feel, think and interact. reporter dan ashley shows us an unusual exhibit on mental health. >> reporter: step inside the changing face of what is normal. >> the core of the exhibition are these objects that were discovered in the attic of a men -- a mental health facility in upstate new york. the objects are now on loan to the exploratorium in san francisco, providing a rare glimpse into the lives of psychiatric patients over the last 100 years.

these are the things patients brought with them to the psychiatric center and left behind when they moved or passed away. the staff would carefully pack up the belongings and store them in the attic. >> when the hospital finally closed in 1995, there were more than 400 suitcases and trunks there. employees volunteered, took their own time to wrap them up and turn them over to the new york state museum. >> then a couple years ago, john launched a kickstarter campaign with an online video to raise money to photograph those objects. >> it's almost as if it were a time capsule that was put away and forgotten about. >> the campaign brought in $18,000. more than double john's goal. >> the photographs tell a story, both about the time that the patients lived and the things they chose to bring with them. >> john's pictures are part of the exploratorium's exhibit. >> a box that was mailed to a patient at willard, and you can see it's his wooden leg and some shoes and the leather strap that was used to attach the leg to his body.

>> karen miller is a psychiatrist who examined the items along with records. it includes her comparisons between how patients were treated at willard then and how they would likely be treated now. the owner of this trunk was a nurse, admitted in 1914 with a condition known as dimensa. >> she did not have a psychotic illness. she had severe depression and she recovered at willard, but she never left. she was admitted at about age 40 and she lived to 102. >> the team that created this exhibit told us the more they learned about the patients, the more they liked and identified with many of them. the team hopes the objects will help visitors relate to the mentally ill in a new way and take away some of the stigma. >> really get people to understand that that is not a "we" situation, it's really an" "us" situation.

? welcome back. it's the app that may have changed your facebook news feed forever. this week the creator of the cartoons called bit strips paid a visit to san francisco. jonathan bloom caught up with them for a behind the scenes look at the strips that makes comic strips starring you. >> reporter: a few weeks ago i took a gamble, writing a story about an app i had never heard of, called bit strips. well, the story was a success and so was the app. with 30 billion users, bit strips are officially a i think thing. the guy who created them finally came up for air to give me the long-awaited interview. >> i have been making comics since i was a little kid. it was the favorite thing to do with my friends. that's jacob black stock.

but his friends call him bog. >> that's what my friends call me. >> he greets his users and introduced the new holiday comics. you can plug yourself in next to frosty. they make new cartoons every day. we have a small team. we have a little writers room that's led by me and some of the other cofounders. >> remember the writers room from "dick van dyke"? >> after his monologue alan flogs his writer and kicks the dog. >> here it is with bit strips, complete with comfy couches that they sent us from toronto. >> we do it in stick figures. we have a stock of index cards. >> eventually the index cards make it on to a giant wall, and if they are lucky, taken down and transformed into the full color cartoons you can add your own face to. that's the high-tech look. a lot of work went into it. >> it wasn't just about the making the likeness of you, but it was about bringing emotion into about it and making it expressive. >> it was used to animate this french political ad.
